Golf in Portugal
Portugal is rapidly becoming one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations for British tourists. It’s not really hard to see why; outstanding beaches, culture-rich cities, charming seaside villages, rugged and breathtaking scenery and world-class golf courses.
Golfing holidays are really taking off in the region, particularly around the Algarve. There is a wide range of courses to choose from, depending on your level of skill and the size of your wallet and with an amiable climate all year round, people can tee-off in winter without being soaked or blown away..
Because of the income generated from these holidays, the number of courses continues to increase and now world-famous course designers are being pulled in to boost the region’s reputation as an internationally renowned destination for avid golfers. .
The beauty with the Algarve in particular, is that unlike other places such as Dubai and Ireland, there is more to do than just golf. This means a family can go on holiday even if the whole family doesn’t play golf. .
From Faro, it is just a few hour’s drive to Vilamoura and Albufeira. Here you will find outstanding courses such as Salgados, Pinhal and Laguna. The beaches are sandy, the water is crystal clean and the coastline is rugged and dramatic as cliffs plunge to the sea. .
Faro has attractive remnants of colonial and Moorish-influenced architecture and Lago’s has a beautiful walled ‘old-town’ in the centre with quaint winding streets and white-washed buildings. .
The whole of the coastline has a fantastic, interconnected transport system allowing you to hop from course to course and beach to beach. The best option is to hire a car so you can make your own way around and travel easily between Faro and Lagos and various places in between. .
The best time to visit the region if you want to save money and avoid the crowds is in shoulder season, i.e. in the two months prior and post peak season – July and August. The weather is still warm and rainfall is minimal, meaning you can still sunbathe and spend time on the green. .
